Press conferences dedicated to events in South Osetia and Abhazia held in the Embassy of Russian Federation in Mexico on August, 12 and 27, 2008

During the press conference Valery Pogrushevsky, Minister-Counselor of the Embassy of Russian Federation in Mexico, declared that the events on the Caucasus “were aimed at the mass-destruction”, so that the interference of Russian troops was indispensable. He regarded the military operation of the Georgian troops as “a reckless step”, the hidden motive of which was the desire of the President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with the aid of the United States. “I want to join NATO and I’m trying to be a good boy”, - he commented the behavior of the Georgian President.

V.Pogrushevsky disclaimed the assumptions of that Russian troops had the initiative of attack aiming the access of Russia to oil recourses. He added that soon “all the world will find out the truth, when it will see the photos”.

As regards this, the representative of the Embassy declared that some international news agencies, particularly from the US, are trying to manipulate the public opinion to create the impression of the Russian occupancy of the Georgian territory. During the press conference were shown some videos and photos made by BBC, CNN and Reuters, where can be clearly seen that the “victims” in the electronic medias and on the pages of the newspapers all over the world “are sitting for the photographers and the operators”.

V.Pogrushevsky assured that the Government of Dmitry Medvedev doesn’t have militarist intentions; the new reality is a world of the international law and agreement, unlike the period of Cold war.

The Russian diplomat informed that the President D.Medvedev signed the Decree on the acceptance of independence of the South Ossetia and Abkhazia, that was supported by both chambers of the Parliament, since it is the only way to prevent the mass destruction of the civil population.

The Treaty on Peace, Cooperation and Mutual Aid, that was prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, is a control factor of the violence, that stated on august the 8th, 2008, when Georgia invaded the South Ossetia.

“Russia calls for other states to follow the example of Russia. It is not an easy decision, but it is the only possibility to save peoples’ lives”, - quoted the Minister-counselor the words of the Russian President.
